How to dress a baby safely in a car seat in winter
The awkward part of a winter car trip is the walk to the car. You want your baby warm outside, but the thick coat that helps on the pavement does not belong beneath the car-seat harness.
Why the puffy coat comes off
The American Academy of Pediatrics explains that padded coats and snowsuits compress in a crash, leaving space beneath the harness. Use thin layers underneath instead. Fasten and adjust the harness according to your seat's manual; you should not be able to pinch slack in the straps.

Separate the outdoor outfit from the travel outfit
Plan the short walk to the car as its own step. Keep outdoor clothes easy to remove when you reach the seat, and leave enough time to buckle up without rushing. A fitted bodysuit, trousers or a sleepsuit can form the base of the travel outfit; choose any additional thin layer with the seat instructions in mind.
The AAP suggests adding a blanket or coat over the fastened harness, with the face uncovered. Do not place a stroller footmuff or unapproved insert beneath the baby or the straps.

A cold morning does not mean a cold car all journey
Once the heating has been running, reassess rather than leaving every outdoor layer in place. The NHS advises removing hats and extra clothing in warm transport. Snugometer's car-seat setting uses the vehicle's interior temperature for this reason; the outside forecast alone is not enough.
Make the return trip easier
Keep the coat where you can reach it at your destination, rather than buried beneath the shopping. Before you set off again, check the harness from the beginning. Yesterday's fit is not a shortcut when today's clothes are different.
An outfit calculator cannot confirm that a seat is installed correctly or that a harness fits. Use the seat manual, and ask the manufacturer or a qualified local car-seat adviser if you are unsure.
