My baby has cold hands but a warm body: do they need another layer?
You touch a tiny hand and immediately wonder whether to fetch another cardigan. Pause before adding one: hands alone are not a reliable way to decide how much clothing your baby needs.
Where should I check instead?
The Lullaby Trust suggests feeling the chest or back of the neck. Hands and feet commonly feel cooler. Hot or sweaty skin is a reason to remove a layer, rather than adding warmth because the fingers feel cold.
Look at the whole setup
Think about what is around your baby as well as what they are wearing. Have you just arrived from outside? Is a footmuff still zipped up? Did the car heating come on? These details are easy to miss when your attention is on one cold hand.
A calculator result is only as relevant as its inputs. If your baby is now indoors, change the situation and use the room temperature. Do not keep an outdoor recommendation just because it looked right before you left home.
Does a touch check tell me if my baby has a fever?
No. Checking skin to help choose clothing is different from measuring body temperature. Do not use the Snug Meter, a warm chest or a clothing change to rule out illness.
If your baby seems unwell or you are worried, seek medical advice. A newborn, a baby born premature or a baby with particular health needs may need individual guidance rather than a general layering suggestion.
Make the observation useful
If this question keeps coming up at bedtime, note the room temperature, the bag you used and what your baby wore. That gives you something concrete to discuss with your health visitor or paediatrician. There is no need to turn each check into a new wardrobe experiment.
For everyday planning, start with the situation you are in now, keep removable layers within reach and look at your baby again when the conditions change.
