What should a baby wear in hot weather?
On a hot day, the outfit is only part of the plan. Where you go, how long you stay and whether you can find shade matter too. Begin with those decisions before filling the bag with extra clothes.
Keep the daytime outfit simple
The NHS newborn-clothing guide suggests lightweight cotton and says a single clothing layer can be enough in hot weather. That is general guidance, not a promise that one particular outfit suits every temperature or baby.
Choose something easy to change and check the forecast for the hours you will actually be outside. A shaded short errand and a long afternoon in an exposed park need different plans, even if the forecast shows the same number.
Shade is not a blanket over the pram
The NHS advises keeping babies under six months out of direct sunlight. Use a suitable parasol or sunshade on the pushchair; do not cover it with a blanket, which can trap heat. Clothing does not replace shade.
Think through the indoor stops
A shop, bus or café may feel quite different from the pavement outside. Bring a light spare layer if your route calls for it, but keep it in the bag until it is needed. Packing an option is different from dressing your baby in every possible option.
If you use the calculator, enter today's conditions rather than treating 25°C or another number as a universal summer setting. Check your baby as the surroundings change.
Bedtime is a separate decision
Do not carry the afternoon forecast into the sleep calculator. Use the bedroom temperature and your sleeping bag's own instructions. The daytime clothes that worked outside are not automatically the right clothes for a warm bedroom.
